French Café
Order a glass of red wine or a Pastis, sit yourself down at a terrace table and watch the world go by. The typical ‘French café’, the historical crib of much of popular French musical culture, is the inspiration behind this, the latest edition to the series of colourful compilations by the Putumayo record label. This rich collection of ‘chanson’ classics and new voices from the so-called ‘hexagon’ presents songs by international legends such as Serge Gainsbourg, George Brassens and Brigitte Bardo, and national darlings Barbara and Jane Birkin. Alongside whom contemporary groups and singers like Enzo Enzo, Paris Combo and Sanseverino may be discovered, their work a modern mix of the more traditional ingredients of French ‘chanson’, Italian accordions, gypsy jazz together with elements of pop, electronic music and reggae. While much of the world’s musical heritage is forgotten and lost in time, young French artists remain strongly influenced by those that have come before them. ‘French Café’ is an enticing invitation to partake of this vibrant tradition, alive and kicking in the heart of Europe.
